For certain major updates (e.g., moving from version 1.x to 2.0), a standard update may not be sufficient. The following procedure is recommended to ensure a clean transition and avoid conflicts, especially when database updates are required.
Pre-Update Checklist #
- Backup Your Site: Crucial. Ensure you have a full backup of your WordPress files and database before proceeding.
- Note Customizations: If you have made any changes directly to the parent theme’s files, note them down, as they will be lost during this process. This reinforces the necessity of using a child theme.
Step 1: Update the Theme via Reinstallation #
- Deactivate Digishift: Navigate to Appearance > Themes. Activate a different theme (e.g., Twenty Twenty-Four). This ensures the Digishift theme is not running when you delete it.
- Delete Digishift: While the default theme is active, find the Digishift theme and click “Theme Details,” then click the “Delete” button. Your posts, pages, and settings are safe in the database.
- Install the New Version: Download the latest
Installable WordPress file only(.zip) from your ThemeForest account. - Upload & Activate: Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme. Select the new
digishift.zipfile, install it, and click “Activate.”
Step 2: Update All Plugins #
- After reactivating Digishift, check for update notifications.
- Navigate to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Update all Digishift-related plugins (e.g., Digishift Core, Elementor) to their latest versions.
Step 3: Update the Database (If Required) #
- Mandatory for Major Jumps: If you are updating from a version before 2.0, a database update is mandatory.
- How to Update: After updating the theme and plugins, navigate to Appearance. You should see a prominent notice or a new menu item (e.g., “Upgrade to 2.0”). Click this button to run the necessary database migration scripts. Do not skip this step.
Step 4: Verify the Redux Framework Plugin #
- The Redux Framework plugin powers the theme options. Ensure it is installed and activated. You can manage it from Appearance > Install Plugins.
Step 5: Regenerate Thumbnails #
- Why: Major updates often change image sizes. Regenerating thumbnails ensures all images display correctly in new layouts.
- How: Install a plugin like “Force Regenerate Thumbnails.” After installation, go to Tools > Force Regenerate Thumbnails and run the process.
Final Step: Clear All Caches #
- Clear your browser cache, any caching plugin cache (e.g., W3 Total Cache, WP Rocket), and any server-level cache (e.g., Varnish, CDN). Finally, reload your site to check if everything works correctly.
