For certain major updates (e.g., moving from version 1.x to 2.0), a standard update may not be sufficient. The following procedure is recommended to ensure a clean transition and avoid conflicts, especially when database updates are required.

Pre-Update Checklist #

  • Backup Your Site: Crucial. Ensure you have a full backup of your WordPress files and database before proceeding.
  • Note Customizations: If you have made any changes directly to the parent theme’s files, note them down, as they will be lost during this process. This reinforces the necessity of using a child theme.

Step 1: Update the Theme via Reinstallation #

  1. Deactivate Digishift: Navigate to Appearance > Themes. Activate a different theme (e.g., Twenty Twenty-Four). This ensures the Digishift theme is not running when you delete it.
  2. Delete Digishift: While the default theme is active, find the Digishift theme and click “Theme Details,” then click the “Delete” button. Your posts, pages, and settings are safe in the database.
  3. Install the New Version: Download the latest Installable WordPress file only (.zip) from your ThemeForest account.
  4. Upload & Activate: Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme. Select the new digishift.zip file, install it, and click “Activate.”

Step 2: Update All Plugins #

  1. After reactivating Digishift, check for update notifications.
  2. Navigate to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
  3. Update all Digishift-related plugins (e.g., Digishift Core, Elementor) to their latest versions.

Step 3: Update the Database (If Required) #

  • Mandatory for Major Jumps: If you are updating from a version before 2.0, a database update is mandatory.
  • How to Update: After updating the theme and plugins, navigate to Appearance. You should see a prominent notice or a new menu item (e.g., “Upgrade to 2.0”). Click this button to run the necessary database migration scripts. Do not skip this step.

Step 4: Verify the Redux Framework Plugin #

  • The Redux Framework plugin powers the theme options. Ensure it is installed and activated. You can manage it from Appearance > Install Plugins.

Step 5: Regenerate Thumbnails #

  • Why: Major updates often change image sizes. Regenerating thumbnails ensures all images display correctly in new layouts.
  • How: Install a plugin like “Force Regenerate Thumbnails.” After installation, go to Tools > Force Regenerate Thumbnails and run the process.

Final Step: Clear All Caches #

  • Clear your browser cache, any caching plugin cache (e.g., W3 Total Cache, WP Rocket), and any server-level cache (e.g., Varnish, CDN). Finally, reload your site to check if everything works correctly.
